Is Fair Deal backdated?

No — Fair Deal funding is never backdated. It is paid from the funding-approval date (or the date of admission to care, if that is later), so any weeks before approval are paid at the full nursing-home rate by the family.

This is why timing matters so much. The HSE's assessment only begins when a complete application is received — missing information delays the start — and funding does not reach back to cover the wait.

The practical takeaway: the gap between going into care and getting approved is paid at the full weekly rate. A complete, first-time application keeps that gap as short as possible.
